White is the colour of excitement!
At the heart of the Zillertal and the Tux Alps is probably the finest upland valley in the Tyrol, the Tux valley, together with its resorts of Tux and Finkenberg. Because it is situated at an altitude of between 850m and 3,250m, Tux-Finkenberg is a dream in white. Towering majestically over the Tux valley, at the far end of the valley, stands the Hintertux Glacier.
Ski and Glacier World Zillertal 3000
245 km of powder snow pistes, 74 ultra-modern lift and cable-car systems and 30 traditional bars and cafés – all of the above available to the winter sports fan every day within the greater Tux valley ski area. The party scene gets going on the Penkenjoch in Finkenberg and starts its glacier tour with the "150er Tux", a 150-seater cabin lift, to the Rastkogel sunshine plateau. Then it's onwards via superbly groomed pistes to "heaven on high" – to the Eggalm ski area. After a warm lift journey − because from this winter, winter sports fans are transported for the first time on the NEW AND ONE AND ONLY 6y Lattenalmbahn, a 6-seater chair lift with weather-protection canopy and seat heating. There on the Hintertux Glacier is the starting point for a 12-km long machine-snowed downhill, known as the Schwarze Pfanne or Black Frying Pan, where the message is "You can ski down to your hotel doorstep!"
The Hintertux Glacier ... 3000m above sea level
In the spring of 2009, the Hintertux Glacier was justifiably named by SKIAREA judges as the "Best glacier ski area in the world". After all, Austria's only all-year-round ski area can boast 86 superbly groomed powder snow pistes, the latest cable cars and lift systems and then there's a magical view from the panoramic terrace at 3,250m over the surrounding 3,000m-high peaks. Powder snow from October to May can be guaranteed, and that's not just down to nature but also to 100% snow certainty. At this altitude there is nothing to worry about on that score. The Natural Ice Palace at an altitude of 3,200m has no match anywhere in the world. A naturally formed crevasse has been made accessible to the public. Perfectly safe and secure, every visitor can expect a unique and mysterious colour spectacle in the glacier-blue Natural Ice Palace.
Away from the piste
You won't need to look far for alternatives to skiing in Tux-Finkenberg. They are quick and easy to find. Every day 28 km of cross-country trails are groomed and they appeal not just to classic cross-countryers but just as much to skaters. Ski tourers can access countless, virgin deep-snow slopes, while those who want to do their cardiovascular system a power of good, there are 68 km of winter footpaths on which to explore this natural paradise. To give an extra dose of conviviality to your holiday, savour some quintessential mountain hut magic on a fun toboggan ride down one of three illuminated natural toboggan runs. Bavarian curling and ice-skating on natural ice-rinks in Tux-Lanersbach and Finkenberg have become very popular activities. But snowshoe walks, ice-climbing expeditions on the Hintertux Glacier, cave trekking in the Spannagel cave or winter canyoning can transform the best days of the year into an unforgettable experience.
