The Berliner High Route / Berliner Hoehenweg

6 or 7-Day Mountain Trek in the National Park of the Zillertal Alps

Route: Finkenberg – Gams Hut – Friesenberg House – Olperer Hut – Furtschagl House - Berliner Hut – Greizer Hut - Kasseler Hut – Mayrhofen

Day 1
You get by bus to Finkenberg (Teufel Bridge/Teufelsbruecke) and ascend the Gams Hut/Gamshuette (1.916 m). There are two routes nos. 534 and 533. See sketch map and route description of the Zillertal Alpine Foothill Trail/ Zillertaler Voralpenweg. Another route goes through Ginzling / Gamsgrube.

Day 2
From the Gams Hut (1.916 m) you follow a short ascent to the Gruenbergspitze (route AV-Weg no. 536, red-white marking). Then you take a left road fork on the steep grass hillsides up to the Grey Plateau / Graue Platte/ (2.177 m). From there on you descend to the Feldalpe (1.865 m) and go on walking to the Pitzenalm (1.874 m, on-mountain snack house / Jausenstation). Passing by the Pitzenalpe, Lackenalm and Kesselalpe, past the ruined Riffler Hut you get to the Friesenberg House (2.460 m). Walking time estimation: 8 – 9 hrs. This trail suits only for experienced mountaineers. Beware of the changeable weather conditions. There is no possibilities to stay overnight on the whole route. Difficulty level: black. Anyway the route offers a wonderful panoramic view onto 3000 m high mountains of the Zillertal Main Ridge. The descent Gamshut – Friesenberg House is possible at the Feldalpe and Pitzenalpe, Kesselalm and Wesendlkar.

Day 3
A rather easy intermediate route starts at the Friesenberg House (2.477 m), goes to the lake Friesenbergsee, runs some hundred meters uphill and continues on the beautiful route no. 526 to the Olperer Hut (2.388 m). From here on you descend on the route Weitwander-Weg no. 502 to the reservoir lake Schegeisstausee. Then you go past the snack house Jausenstation Zamsgatterl, located directly on the lakeside. You go on walking along the lake to the Schlegeisgrund and ascend to the Furtschagl House (2.293 m). Walking time estimation: 6 – 7 hrs. Route no. 502.

Day 4
The ascent to the jag Schoenbichler Scharte (3.060 m) begins at the Furtschagl House (2.285 m). From the jag you can easily climb a summit of the Schoenbichler Horn (3.133 m). Now you go downwards along somehow more difficult cliffy ridge the Schoenbichler Grat, which is however protected by metal rails, to the road fork Alpenrosen Hut / Alpenrosenhuette (from here on reachable in 15 minutes on the route no. 520) or you continue on the route no. 502 to the Berliner Hut / Berlinerhuette. Walking time estimation: 5 – 6 hrs.

Day 5
Starting at the Berliner Hut / Berliner Huette (2.042 m) you go upwards on the route no. 502 to a very beautiful lake Schwarzsee (2.472 m). The same route runs in a very steep serpentine road to the Rosskar and then to the jag Moerchenscharte (2.872 m). Afterwards you descend on the short path, protected by metal rails, and on the serpentine road go downhill to the Floitengrund. Not far from the Talboden you have to use metal rails and aluminium rungs. Then you follow the marked path to a bridge over the Floitenbach Brook (1.834 m) and again climb the route 502 to the Greizer Hut / Greizer Huette (2.227 m). Walking time estimation: 6 – 7 hrs.

Day 6
The route no. 502 begins on stone slabs, runs past the Greizer Hut / Greizer Huette (2.227 m) uphill to the Lapenscharte (2.701 m). You descend to the road fork Gruene Wand Hut / Gruene-Wand-Huette and walk on the same route (there are some spots, protected by metal rails) across the whole valley basin to the Kasseler Hut / Kasseler Huette (2.178 m). Walking time estimation: 6 hrs. Another option: Passing by the Lapenscharte, you descend on the route no. 518 steeply to the Taxachalm. From there on you pass the brook Stillupbach and walk outwards the valley to the Gruene Wand Hut / Gruenen-Wand-Huette (1.436 m). Taking this option you have a possibility to take a bus in the direction of Mayrhofen.

Day 7
The Kasseler Hut / Kasseler Huette (2.178 m) is a get-go of the route named “The Siebenschneidenweg”, also known as the Aschaffenburger High Route / Aschaffenburger Hoehenweg (route no. 519). First you climb a little upwards in the direction of the Sonntagskar (2.300 m), then slightly downwards to the Weißkar (an emergency shelter is placed here). You go on past the Weißkarjoechl and the Hennsteigenkamp to the Samerschartl (2.401 m). You get rope protected through the Hasenkar to the Krumschnabelscharte; then downwards through the Pobbergkar to the Pobberg. From there on first you (rope protected) cross a very steep passage at the Foellenbergkar and get to the Edel Hut / Edelhuette (2.238 m). Here you can stay overnight.

Another option is to go on the route no. 514 to the upper lift station of the Ahornbahn (walking time estimation 1 hr. Last lift drive - 5 pm) and get back to the village of Mayrhofen. Or you walk approx. 2 hrs down to the Alpenrose (1.398 m) and continue walking for another hour to Mayrhofen.

Walking time estimation from the Kasseler Hut till the Edel Hut - 9 hrs. You can nothing but walk between the Kassler and Edel Huts. There is no possibility to descend in some other way!

Attention: This one-day route is very fastidious due to its length of 14 km and hazardous weather conditions. Thus it is suitable for experienced and well-trained mountaineers only.

Of course this multi-day hut to hut trek can be modified according to personal requests of its participants. Recommended trekking season: August and the beginning of September.
