Traditions that live on and the associated handicrafts are still deeply rooted in the hearts of the people of Zillertal. In other places, cultural heritage is something that is only found in museums – not so in Zillertal where traditional handicrafts are still very much a part of everyday life.

Zillertal is a place where customs are greatly valued, passionately cultivated and thoroughly integrated into everyday life. Whether Grasausläuten (bell processions), Klöpflsingen (door-to-door carol singing) or Krampuslaufen (Krampus parades), history is brought back to life and the deeper meanings behind the events are remembered.

    Culture & theatre festivals

The people of Zillertal are culturally active and playful – and not just when it come to music. From rural comedians to internationally renowned theatre productions, there’s something for everyone.

    Gauder Fest

Every year on the first weekend in May, Zell am Ziller invites people to enjoy the traditional “Gauder Fest” (Gauder festival) – Austria’s largest spring and folk costume festival. Cattle drives Zillertal

When the period for grazing in the mountain pastures is over, the cows are festively adorned and driven down into the valley by the farmers. The local towns celebrate the arrival of the herds with a spectacular festival involving traditional music and a broad array of culinary delights.

    Silent Night, Holy Night

Every year, people around the world sing the soulful Christmas carol “Silent Night, Holy Night”. However, without the great help of musical families from Zillertal, the story of what’s possibly the world’s most famous song would have been a very different one.
