472 Mayrhofen - Alpenrose Fellenberg
Ride in a southerly direction from M;ayrhofen train station until "Einfahrt Mitte" and follow signs for Brandberg. After passing through town, the ascent begins and leads for a short section along the edge of a ravine. Before you reach the sub-district of Pignellen, turn right at "Wassergenossenschaft Mayrhofen" (water cooperative). Leading gently uphill, the route takes you past Gasthof Zillergrund. After crossing another bridge, you will go past the tollbooth and enter the private road, for which cars must pay a toll. The route continues again alongside the Ziller River, before it leads off to the right and up a gravel road. The trail, which is closed to public traffic, heads continuously uphill. After the fourth winding bend, you will cross the Ahornbach River, which then drops spectacularly into the depths of the Zillergrund Valley. It is quite possible that you will see the remains of previous avalanches above and below the trail in spring. The final few bends before the peak are pretty challenging: leading steeply uphill, the gravel trail leads to the crossing of Fellenberg Creek. The remaining metres to Alpenrose alpine farm are then surprisingly easy, comforted by the knowledge that a tasty snack awaits. Magnificent panoramic views of Mayrhofen more than compensate for the efforts required. You can then enjoy a relaxed and somewhat speedier return journey, freewheeling back down the same route.
