487 Penkenbahn I
After a fifteen-minute ride with the gondola, which offers ample space to 4 cyclists with their bikes, the tour begins at the top terminal of the Penkenbahn cable car.
The well-made Panorama Trail takes cyclists 300 metres in uphill elevation to the Penkenjoch - past the paraglider launch area and Knorren via ferrate climbing route. Those interested in climbing this can borrow a climbing harness from the cable car operators free of charge.
Once at Penkenjoch, the highest point of this route, you can enjoy fabulous views of Zillertal's tributary valleys, with their majestic peaks and glaciers.
This impressive panorama can be savoured even better from the comfort of one of the quaint and traditional guesthouses. It is important, after all, to replenish flagging energy reserves, don't you think?
After this little break, your powers of concentration will be challenged again with a steep downhill run to the Horbertal Valley. Where snowboarders and free-skiers enjoy airtime antics in winter is where you will be whizzing down an exciting downhill run.
Once down in the valley, the route takes you past the Sunnalm and on to Schwendberger Strasse. If you want to see more of the breathtaking panorama, you can combine this tour with a ride along the famous Zillertal High Alpine Road.
If not, take the downhill run via Schwenberg to Hippach and the Ziller Bike Path, part of the Bike Trail Tirol, and ride back to Mayrhofen.
